Laryngoscopy is the technique of placing a rigid or flexible endoscope via the mouth to visualise the larynx (opening to the windpipe or trachea). This technique provides direct visualisation of this structure under magnification allowing structural abnormalities to be diagnosed and any diseased areas to be accurately biopsied (sampled). Laryngoscopy is particularly useful in the diagnosis of tumours (neoplasia), inflammation and paralysis of the larynx.
